History
We have a long and storied history as a not-for-profit mission driven community agency at the heart of which is the 5th Commandment, “Honor thy father and thy mother so that thy days might be long upon the earth which I the Lord give thee.” Serving older people with Jewish needs was the original goal of the Ladies’ Hebrew Sheltering Aid Society when it was founded in 1922. With the purchase of land and a stately mansion in Jacksonville’s Riverside area in 1946, River Garden Hebrew Home was founded.
Since then the Home has been providing award winning care to Jacksonville’s senior community. In 1946 the Home opened with 4 residents. Dedicated and visionary lay leadership led fundraising and building drives in 1955, 1963, 1969 and 1985 that allowed the home to expand and serve a growing population. By 1969 its capacity had grown to 192 residents. The Home relocated in 1989 to its present location on a beautifully landscaped 40-acre campus in Jacksonville’s Mandarin area, where it currently serves 180 residents.

Anchored by the care center, River Garden’s campus is now a hub of senior programs and services. These services include: short-stay rehabilitation, traditional long-term care, skilled Alzheimer’s and memory care, adult day care, independent living patio apartments, geriatric assessment and case management, outpatient therapies, licensed home health care and the Albert Z. Fleet Geriatric Training Center.
In 2023, River Garden was recognized with its 10th Governor’s Gold Seal award. Since 2018, the Home has continuously earned its accreditation from The Joint Commission, a seal of top quality. Additionally, the Home is 5-Star rated by the Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA) and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). Consumer awards and reviews from US News & World Report and Newsweek, as well as local publications, support these marks of excellence.
River Garden Hebrew Home is licensed by the State of Florida as a skilled nursing facility, and certified for participation in the Medicare and Medicaid programs.
